OUR PROJECTS

Within the LIMA network there are multiple ongoing projects surrounding LGBTQ+ health care and medical education. If you would like to know more about one of our projects, or have an idea of a project that you would like to start with us, please get in contact!

Currently one of our main projects is researching the current level of teaching of LGBTQ+ health in the UK undergraduate medical curriculum, and the impacts this has on how prepared medical students feel. We believe it is important to conduct formal research so that our campaigning has a firm foundation. We initially conducted a literature review on this topic, which is currently in the process of awaiting publication. We also conducted a nationwide survey of medical students looking at their perspectives on how much teaching on LGBTQ+ health they have had, their level of knowledge on LGBTQ+ health, and whether they want more teaching on LGBTQ+ health care (& how they would like this to be done). Our paper detailing this study can be read by clicking the link below.

OPEN LETTER: GMC AND MSC

In June 2022 wrote and published a letter the General Medical Council and the Medical Schools Council, calling for a change in LGBTQ+ health inclusion in the medical curriculum. We had over 15 endorsing organisations, 10 key signatories, and 250 signatories. We are in ongoing conversations with the GMC and MSC as a result of the letter.

RESEARCH: LITERATURE REVIEW ON LGBTQ+ HEALTHCARE TEACHING IN THE UK MEDICAL CURRICULUM

One of the first things that we did as a network was to look at what was already known about the current level of teaching of LGBTQ+ healthcare in UK medical schools. We firstly believe it is important to conduct formal research so that our campaigning has a firm foundation. We also believe in the importance of learning from the work and views of other people, so were keen to see what had already been done.

RESEARCH: NATIONWIDE SURVEY OF UK MEDICAL STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF THE LEVEL OF TEACHING ON LGBTQ+ HEALTHCARE IN THE MEDICAL CURRICULUM

We believe that our campaigning should be based on a strong foundation of evidence based research. After conducting a literature review, we came to the conclusion that more research needed to be conducted to add weight to any future campaigns - which led to this research project. This has just been published and can be read by following the link below. If you want to know more about this project please feel free to contact us.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS:

ASME ASM

We presented two posters at ASME ASM 2022 in Aberdeen. One of these detailed the findings of our literature review, and one detailed the findings of our national survey of medical students.

We received the JASME Communication Runner Up Prize for the poster on our survey.

LIMA PRIDE CAMPAIGN: JUNE 202

In Pride Month 2022 LIMA ran a Pride Campaign on social media (Twitter and Instagram) where we shared daily facts, figures and tips on LGBTQ+ healthcare. You can see these posts on our social media platforms, or see the PDF of all the infographics that we used below.

If you would like to use these for your own teaching or activism please feel free, just please credit us and the organisations that we used to collate the information!
